Scotland consists of the northern part of the British mainland and the archipelagos of Orkneys and Shetlands to the north and the Hebrides to the west. The ethnic group from which the Scots take their name were the Scots, a Celtic tribe from Ireland who settled the west coast and Hebrides from about AD 400. Besides them in Scotland at this time were the Kingdom of Strathclyde to the south, the Picts to the north and east, and Anglo-Saxon immigrants. All were converted to Christianity by Irish monks in the sixth century.
