Built as a fortress in the early 13th century, it was rebuilt as a villa in the 16th century, given to Anne de Montmorency by Francis I. Fère-en-Tardenois houses artifacts from the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. This is evidenced by the seven powerful round towers of the feudal block and the beautiful Renaissance bridge gallery that crosses the moat with five arches. In the center of Fère-en-Tardenois, a small village 3km southwest of the castle, explore the ancient 16th-century grain market with its chestnut and pile foundations, held every Wednesday evening.
