The story

The story of Barony Castle Hotel

Barony Castle Hotel stands near Eddleston, outside Peebles in the Scottish Borders, about 35 minutes from Edinburgh. The hotel's own website describes the building as an imposing 16th-century castle, expanded over time into the 82-bedroom hotel guests find today, with six named suites including the Lady Marie and Tweeddale suites.

From 1968 to 1986, the property was run by Jan Stanislaw Tomasik under the name Black Barony Hotel. During his ownership, the Great Polish Map of Scotland was built in the grounds: a large relief model designed by cartographer Kazimierz Trafas of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, built mainly between 1974 and 1976. Historic Environment Scotland produced a 3D record of the map, and its restoration was unveiled in April 2018 by then Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop.

The sleep

Rooms at Barony Castle Hotel

The 82 bedrooms are grouped as Classic Rooms, Deluxe Rooms and Pet Friendly Rooms, plus six named suites: the Lady Marie, Tweeddale, Darnhall, Dean View, Kelly and Eddleston suites. Family rooms are also available for larger groups.

The hotel's own room pages do not state which rooms, if any, sit within the oldest part of the 16th-century building, so ask when booking if sleeping in the historic core matters to you. Pet Friendly Rooms are set aside for guests travelling with a dog, though the hotel's site does not publish a pet fee.

The table

Eating at Barony Castle Hotel

Dining is centred on the 1536 Restaurant, which has earned a Rosette award and focuses on locally sourced ingredients, and the Blue Dug Bar, which stocks an extensive range of malt whiskies. The hotel holds an AA four-star rating.

The grounds

Around Barony Castle Hotel

The 25-acre grounds include forest walking routes and connect to mountain-bike trails near Glentress. The Great Polish Map of Scotland stands within the grounds: a relief model of Scotland measuring about 50 by 40 metres, built mainly between 1974 and 1976 and restored ahead of a 2018 relaunch.

Traquair House, Rosslyn Chapel and the Go Ape adventure course are within reach of the hotel, according to its own site.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • The hotel's room pages do not say which, if any, of the 82 bedrooms sit inside the oldest part of the 16th-century building.
  • Exclusive-use wedding packages cover the whole 82-bedroom hotel, so check availability well ahead for a private date.

Who it's for

Who Barony Castle Hotel suits

Barony Castle suits wedding parties wanting a Scottish Borders venue with civil-ceremony licensing and an exclusive-use option, and families or groups who want a swimming pool, gym and plenty of bedrooms in one place. It suits visitors curious about the Great Polish Map of Scotland in the grounds. It suits fewer guests looking specifically for a small, intimate tower-house stay, given the scale of the current 82-bedroom hotel.
