About Kenilworth Castle

Kenilworth Castle stands in the Warwickshire town of the same name. According to English Heritage, Geoffrey de Clinton, a royal chamberlain, established the first castle in the 1120s and built most of the Norman keep. In the early 13th century, King John added an outer circuit of stone walls and a dam to hold back a great lake, making it one of England's most formidable fortresses.

The castle held out for about six months in 1266 during one of the longest sieges in medieval English history, when supporters of Simon de Montfort resisted King Henry III. In the 14th century, John of Gaunt turned the castle into a palace, building the great hall and lavish apartments, and Henry V later added a retreat at the far end of the lake, according to English Heritage.

Elizabeth I granted the castle to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, in 1563, and he entertained the queen there for 19 days in 1575. The castle's fortifications were dismantled after the English Civil War, in 1650, and it is now cared for by English Heritage as a ruin open to visitors.
