Alnwick Castle stands above the River Aln in Northumberland. The earliest written record of a fortified castle here dates from 1138, though the site is thought to have existed earlier: King Malcolm III of Scotland died attacking it in 1093.
Henry de Percy bought the castle in 1309, becoming the 1st Lord Percy, and the Percy family has held it for more than 700 years since. The 4th Earl of Northumberland completed the Barbican in 1475, and later restorations followed, including 18th-century Gothic work under Robert Adam and Capability Brown and a Victorian remodelling by the architect Anthony Salvin between 1854 and 1865.
The castle is owned today by the Duke of Northumberland and managed through Northumberland Estates. It has featured in film and television productions, including scenes from the first Harry Potter film shot in the castle grounds.
