Cardiff Castle stands in the centre of Cardiff, on the site of a Roman fort first built at the end of the 50s AD. After the Norman Conquest, a wooden motte and bailey castle was raised within the old Roman fort's footprint and later rebuilt in stone.
In the 19th century, the 3rd Marquess of Bute worked with the architect William Burges to transform the medieval fortress into a Gothic Revival residence. The 4th Marquess of Bute gave the castle to the city of Cardiff in 1947, and it is run today as a public heritage attraction.
Cardiff Castle is open seven days a week throughout the year, including bank holidays, closing only on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, according to its own website (at the time of checking, September 2026). Summer opening hours run to 6pm and winter hours to 5pm, with final admission one hour before closing. Nearest train station and parking details were not confirmed on the pages opened.
