The story
The story of Buittle Castle
Buittle Castle stands near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway. According to the castle's own website, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification stood on the site from around 1170, and the family later moved from the original motte into a courtyard complex on the bailey after the medieval castle fell into ruin between the 15th and 16th centuries.
The castle's own website says its main tower includes the Baron's Bedchamber, long used as the property's principal bedroom, and a room it associates with visits from Mary, Queen of Scots, which it describes as the only room with an en-suite garderobe from that period.
The current owners describe themselves as descendants of the historical Balliol family and say the property is now in its 30th generation of family ownership, according to the castle's website.

Rooms at Buittle Castle
The castle offers named bedrooms rather than a fixed hotel-style room count, according to its website. The Baron's Bedchamber, on the second floor of the main tower, and the Mary, Queen of Scots Room are both described as being within the main castle structure, and are often used by the bride and groom at weddings.
Two further named rooms, the Munches Room and the Lady Maxwell Room, are in the East Range around the castle courtyard: the Munches Room is decorated, the castle says, in a style referencing the nearby Munches House, and the Lady Maxwell Room occupies a former porter's room at the corner of the courtyard.
The castle's website does not give a total bedroom count or total sleeping capacity, and treats most exclusive-use bookings individually rather than through a fixed rate card.
The table
Eating at Buittle Castle

A separate Afternoon Tea and Tour runs on Saturdays from April to September, with tours at 2:30pm followed by afternoon tea, at £25 per adult and £12 per child, according to the castle's website.
The grounds

Day visitors can join the Saturday afternoon tea and tour without staying overnight, though this is not available on Saturdays when other events are booked, according to the castle's website.
What we'd flag
What we'd flag
- Only some of the named bedrooms, such as the Baron's Bedchamber, are described as being in the main tower; others are in the courtyard range, so ask which building your room is in if that matters to you.
- Exclusive-use and wedding pricing is arranged directly with the castle rather than published as a fixed rate, with wedding quotations usually starting at 4,000 pounds, according to the castle's website.
- General information on dogs, parking and wifi is not published on the castle's website and would need to be confirmed directly when booking.
Who it's for
Who Buittle Castle suits
This suits wedding parties and groups who want sole use of a Scottish castle, since bookings are for the whole property rather than individual rooms, with weddings for between 10 and 70 guests according to the castle.
It is less suited to guests who want a simple, fixed-price room booking, since accommodation, catering and other details are handled directly with the castle rather than through a standard tariff.
