The story

The story of Dalmunzie Castle Hotel

Dalmunzie Castle Hotel stands on a 6,500-acre estate at Spittal of Glenshee, Perthshire. The hotel's own site dates the building to 1510, describing it as a former Laird's mansion, now presented in Scots Baronial style with turrets.

Queen Victoria passed close to the estate in 1848 on her way to Balmoral, and her diary from that trip describes the area as calm and solitary. The wider estate also holds older traces of settlement, including a standing stone and a burial cairn near Glenshee parish church, and the local Fermtoun of Cuthil takes its name from the Gaelic for a clearing in the forest.

The estate's own site says local tradition connects Dalmunzie with the death of Diarmid, a Cateran battle, and the discovery of the Dalmunzie sword.

The sleep

Rooms at Dalmunzie Castle Hotel

Bedrooms include Double, King or Twin, Four-Poster, Tower and Family rooms, plus the Castle Suite and Arbuthnot Suite. The two Tower Rooms are named MacIntosh and Stewart; the hotel's own site does not confirm whether they sit inside a historic tower structure. MacIntosh has a super king bed with original oak floorboards and oak fittings, while Stewart is furnished with an antique super king four-poster bed.

All rooms include tea and coffee facilities and are described by the hotel as dog-friendly, though a specific pet fee is not published. Seven separate cottages are also available across the wider estate, away from the main hotel building.

The table

Eating at Dalmunzie Castle Hotel

Dalmunzie serves breakfast, afternoon tea and a seasonal dinner menu based on Highland produce, alongside a Bar and Lounge menu with bar snacks. The hotel describes its food as authentically Scottish, with the menu changing through the seasons. Gins from the nearby Persie Distillery feature alongside an extensive wine list and a single malt whisky collection. Specific opening times are not published on the pages checked, so confirm details when booking.

The grounds

Around Dalmunzie Castle Hotel

The estate covers about 6,500 acres at Spittal of Glenshee, with its own golf course, salmon and trout fishing, deer stalking and grouse or ptarmigan shooting by season. Bronze Age remains, including a standing stone and burial cairn, lie near Glenshee parish church on the estate.

Walking routes and nearby Munros are promoted on the estate's own site, along with local distilleries in the area. Seven cottages elsewhere on the estate offer separate self-catering stays away from the main hotel.

What we'd flag

  • Wedding ceremonies themselves may need to take place at a licensed venue such as a nearby church, with the reception held at Dalmunzie. Confirm licensing directly with the hotel.
