The story
The story of Dornoch Castle Hotel
Dornoch Castle Hotel occupies the surviving tower of a palace built around 1500 for the bishops of Caithness, standing opposite Dornoch Cathedral in Sutherland. The site may go back further, to an earlier palace associated with Bishop Gilbert in the early 13th century, but the oldest fabric that survives today dates from the late 15th century, according to the hotel's own history page.
The original complex had three towers around a courtyard with a gatehouse. In 1557 Bishop Robert Stewart transferred the property to the Earl of Sutherland's family. The surviving south west tower came through a fire during a 1570 clan feud and was rebuilt with an upper storey and corbelled corner turrets, according to its Category B listing entry.
Around 1880 the building was extended with new ranges, after periods as a courthouse, jail and school in the 18th and 19th centuries. It became a private house in 1922 and a hotel in 1947, with the Thompson family, who also run the neighbouring distillery, taking over in 2000.

Who it's for
Who Dornoch Castle Hotel suits
Dornoch Castle Hotel suits guests who want to sleep inside a genuine medieval building in the Highlands, and whisky enthusiasts, given its links to the neighbouring Dornoch distillery and whisky club. It is less suited to guests who need a lift or ground-floor access throughout, given the building's age and tower stair, though this has not been separately confirmed for every room.
