The story

The story of Glenapp Castle

Glenapp Castle stands on the Ayrshire coast near Ballantrae, South Ayrshire. The estate belonged to the Earl of Orkney before James Hunter bought it in 1864 and commissioned Edinburgh architect David Bryce to design a Scottish Baronial mansion, completed in 1870. Historic Environment Scotland lists the building as a Category B listed building, reference LB856, designated in 1971.

James Lyle Mackay bought Glenapp in 1917 and later became the first Earl of Inchcape. His daughter Elsie Mackay, an aviator and actress, left Glenapp in 1928 to attempt a transatlantic flight with pilot Walter Hinchcliffe. Their aircraft disappeared and neither was ever found. The McMillan family bought the estate in 1994 and spent six years restoring the house and gardens before opening it as a hotel in April 2000. Paul and Poppy Szkiler have owned Glenapp since 2015.

Glenapp has been a member of Relais & Chateaux since 2001. Historic Environment Scotland separately lists the designed landscape and gardens under reference GDL00192.

The sleep

Rooms at Glenapp Castle

All 17 bedroom suites are inside the mansion itself, apart from the separate Garden Cottage Suite in the walled garden, which has its own outdoor space. Suites are grouped as Master Suites with sea views, Junior Suites, and Grand Sea View or Garden View rooms.

The largest is the Castle Penthouse Suite, with four bedrooms across 4,500 square feet, plus a sauna, treatment room, library, media room, and its own kitchen and dining room with private chef and butler service. Ask for an upper-floor suite if a sea view matters to you, since ground-floor suites look onto the garden and woodland instead.
