The story

The story of Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa

Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa stands in Ruthin, Denbighshire, in the Vale of Clwyd. According to Coflein, the archive of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, a castle was constructed on the site from 1277, with a roughly pentagonal moated court about 94 metres by 60 metres, curtain walls, rounded towers and a twin-towered gatehouse.

That medieval castle was largely demolished after a siege in 1646, Coflein records. Five towers and stretches of curtain wall survive today alongside the castle ditch, incorporated into 19th-century garden landscaping around the later house.

The building guests stay in now is a separate, later structure. Coflein dates it to 1825 to 1826 as a private residence, then records that it was remodelled and enlarged between 1849 and 1852, work attributed in part to the architect Henry Clutton, mixing an earlier Gothic-influenced style with later Tudor Gothic detailing in red sandstone.

The mansion later became a private hospital in 1923, closing in 1950, before opening as a hotel from 1963 onwards, according to Coflein's record of the building's history.

The sleep

Rooms at Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa

The hotel has 60 bedrooms across five room categories, from Standard rooms up to a Deluxe Suite named the Prince of Wales Suite, according to the hotel's own website.

The hotel's site describes the suites as inspired by past high-profile guests, but does not state which parts of the building each room type occupies. Guests who care about this should ask the hotel directly which wing, the 1825 core or the 1849 to 1852 extension, their room is in.

The medieval castle ruins, the five surviving towers and curtain walls noted by Coflein, stand in the grounds rather than forming part of the accommodation itself.

The table

Eating at Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa

The hotel's own website lists a tavern restaurant, Tafarn y Ddraig, serving local and seasonal produce, alongside breakfast, afternoon tea, dinner and Sunday lunch service.

A spa, BAZAAR Spa, occupies part of the former castle moat according to the hotel's site, with outdoor hot tubs and treatment rooms.

The grounds

Around Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa

The grounds include the surviving medieval castle remains: five towers and sections of curtain wall around the old castle ditch, according to Coflein's record of the site.

The hotel's website describes acres of gardens and woodland around the property in the Clwydian Range.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • The historic castle on this site is a ruin in the grounds. The building you sleep in is the 19th-century mansion next to it, not the medieval fortress itself.
  • Dogs are only allowed in a limited number of allocated rooms and must be booked in advance, with a £20 per night charge for up to two dogs, according to the hotel's own dog policy page.

Who it's for

Who Ruthin Castle Hotel and Spa suits

The hotel suits guests who want castellated architecture, gardens and a spa, and are happy that the building is a 19th-century mansion rather than the original medieval castle. It also suits dog owners, given the allocated dog-friendly rooms.

It is less suited to anyone who specifically wants to sleep inside genuine medieval castle walls, since those walls survive only as ruins in the grounds rather than as part of the hotel building.
