The story

The story of Walworth Castle Hotel

Walworth Castle stands on land held by the Hansard family from at least the medieval period, according to the Gatehouse Gazetteer record of the site. A 15th-century record of the manor lists a chief messuage, granaries, a stable, a sheepfold and twelve cottages, and the southwest tower of the current building may include medieval fabric, though its exact date is not firmly established.

The present mansion was built around 1600 for Thomas Jenison, an auditor who had purchased the estate from the Ayscough family, and Historic England's listing suggests the builder may have been the mason Thomas Holt. The design set a straight range of rooms between two round corner towers on the south front, with a three-storey frontispiece using superimposed Tuscan, Ionic and Corinthian orders.

The house was altered again in the 18th and 19th centuries. Rococo and Palladian plasterwork was added to interior rooms around 1740, an early 19th-century range was built to the north, and the west front was refronted in 1864. Historic England lists the building Grade I, its highest protection category, and it now operates as a hotel with a restaurant named Hansard's Bar Lounge after the family who once held the land.

Named suites include the King James I Suite and a Four Poster Suite, both inside the castle itself, along with a Four Poster Superior Double. Guests who want to sleep inside the 17th-century walls should book a castle room rather than an annex room when reserving.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • Standard and Four Poster rooms in the annex are a separate, more modern building from the 17th-century castle. If sleeping inside the historic walls matters to you, ask for a castle room when you book.
  • Sources disagree on whether dogs are welcome in the main hotel bedrooms. Two self-catering buildings on the estate, the Lodge and the Holiday Cottage, are advertised as dog-friendly, so check directly with the hotel if you plan to bring a dog to a castle or annex room.

Who it's for

Who Walworth Castle Hotel suits

The castle suits couples planning a wedding, since it hosts ceremonies in its Ballroom and outdoor spaces including Cardinals Court and Lady Palmer's Pavilion. It also suits guests interested in Elizabethan and Jacobean architecture, given the corner towers and 18th-century plasterwork inside. It is less suited to guests who need step-free access throughout the historic part of the building, since castle rooms are reached by older staircases typical of a house of this age.
