About Culzean Castle

Culzean Castle stands on a clifftop above the Firth of Clyde in South Ayrshire. The Kennedy family's association with the estate goes back to the Middle Ages, and Culzean became their principal seat when Sir Thomas Kennedy was created 9th Earl of Cassillis in 1759. In 1776 the 10th Earl commissioned the architect Robert Adam to remodel an existing tower house with later additions into the castellated mansion seen today, work carried out in phases between 1777 and about 1812.

In 1877 the 3rd Marquess of Ailsa had the Edinburgh architects Wardrop and Reid enlarge and refurbish the castle, adding a new entrance porch and a nursery wing while matching Adam's original style. Adam's oval staircase, completed between 1788 and 1812, remains the centrepiece of the interior, along with the circular Round Drawing Room overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Historic Environment Scotland lists Culzean Castle at category A.

In 1945 the 5th Marquess of Ailsa gave the castle and the land around it to the National Trust for Scotland. Historic Environment Scotland's listing records that a visitor apartment was created on the castle's upper floor for General Dwight D. Eisenhower, in recognition of his role as Supreme Allied Commander during the Second World War, and that the west wing was converted into letting flats in the 1960s.
