Lincoln Castle was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror, on a site that reused the stone walls of the earlier Roman city of Lindum Colonia. The castle holds one of the surviving originals of the 1215 Magna Carta.
A red-brick Georgian gaol was built within the castle walls in 1788, with a Victorian prison wing added in 1848. The prison closed in 1878, after about three decades, as running costs rose and prisoner numbers fell.
Between 2010 and 2015, the castle underwent a 22 million pound restoration that created the Medieval Wall Walk and improved its exhibitions. It is run today by Lincolnshire County Council as a heritage attraction.
Lincoln Castle is open from 10am to 5pm between 1 April and 24 October 2026, and from 10am to 4pm for the rest of the year, according to its own website (at the time of checking, September 2026). Nearest train station and parking details were not confirmed on the pages opened in this task.
