The story
The story of Ardoe House Hotel & Spa
Ardoe House was built in 1878 for Alexander 'Soapy' Ogston, an Aberdeen industrialist, according to the hotel's own history page. The mansion stands on the banks of the River Dee at Blairs, on land whose history the hotel traces back to 1244, when Alexander II granted it to Arbroath Abbey.
The house remained a private residence until 1947, when it began its life as a hotel, per the same source. One of its wedding and event suites is still named the Ogston Suite, a link the hotel's own site preserves to the family that built the house.
The sleep
Rooms at Ardoe House Hotel & Spa
The hotel's Feature Rooms are, in its own words, 'situated in the original mansion house', each around 35 square metres with high ceilings and front-facing views, though without lift access. Classic, Family, Privilege, Suite and Dog Friendly rooms are also offered, and the hotel's own pages do not state that all of these sit in the 1878 building, so some are likely in later extensions.
Guests who specifically want to sleep in the original 1878 house should ask for a Feature Room when booking, since that is the only category the hotel's own site explicitly places inside the historic mansion.
The table
Eating at Ardoe House Hotel & Spa
The hotel lists four dining and drinking venues on its own site: Blairs Restaurant, Soapies Brasserie, the Drawing Room and a Whisky Bar, plus a daily afternoon tea service and a Sunday carvery.
The grounds
Around Ardoe House Hotel & Spa
Ardoe House sits in around 30 acres of grounds on the River Dee at Blairs, a few miles from Aberdeen city centre, according to the hotel's own site. The spa wing includes a swimming pool, gym, fitness studio, sauna and steam room.
