The story

The story of Cornhill Castle

The building at Coulter dates from 1871, when the Glasgow merchant Alexander Kay commissioned the architect William Leiper to design a new house above the River Clyde. Historic Environment Scotland lists the result as Cornhill House, describing it as a two-storey range in snecked rubble with a three-storey and attic tower at its north angle, in an Early French Gothic style. It incorporates earlier fabric from around 1840.

Details recorded in the listing include a projecting round-arched porch and angle turret on the north-east elevation, cantilevered second-floor windows, bay windows under a spired roof, and ornamental ironwork finials. The south-east side retains part of an earlier, plainer villa with a pedimented doorway, evidence of the building's growth in stages rather than a single design.

The house was designated a Category B listed building on 4 September 1979. It later served as a home for elderly residents before becoming a hotel in 1998, and joined the Manorview Hotel Group in 2016. A ballroom suite was added to the site in 2008, alongside a separate wedding pavilion.

The listing also records the tower's octagonal turret and conical roof, along with tall chimney stacks that mark out the building against the surrounding countryside. Because the fabric spans an earlier villa of around 1840 and Leiper's more elaborate 1871 remodelling, the house reads as two building periods rather than one design carried out at a single date.

The sleep

Rooms at Cornhill Castle

Rooms and suites sit inside the Victorian house, including the Balmoral Honeymoon Suite and named suites such as the Urquhart, which sleeps up to six across a super king bed and a sofa bed. Executive Double Rooms and Double Rooms are also available in the main building.

Seven separate lodges stand in the grounds beside the River Clyde, each with its own hot tub and sleeping up to four people. These lodges are modern buildings set apart from the 1871 house, so guests wanting to stay inside the historic building should book a room or suite in the main house rather than a lodge.

The table

Eating at Cornhill Castle

The Ghillie restaurant serves Scottish menus in a room with an open fire and dark wood surrounds. A bar is also on site for drinks and informal dining, and the hotel's grounds have space for outdoor dining at larger events.

The grounds

Around Cornhill Castle

The estate covers about ten acres beside the River Clyde, with views towards the Tinto Hills. A wedding pavilion and a ballroom suite, added in 2008, sit alongside the original house for larger events.

The grounds separate the modern lodges from the historic house, so guests staying in a lodge are a short walk from the Victorian building rather than inside it. The river frontage and the Tinto Hills backdrop are the estate's main outdoor features, used in the hotel's own description of the setting.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • The seven hot tub lodges are separate modern buildings in the grounds, not part of the 1871 house. Ask specifically for a room in the main house if the historic building is what you want.
  • The property is a frequent wedding venue, so weekends can be busy with wedding parties.

Who it's for

Who Cornhill Castle suits

Cornhill Castle suits groups wanting a hot tub lodge beside the river, and couples planning a wedding, since the estate has a dedicated pavilion and ballroom for that purpose. It suits families needing more space, given suites such as the Urquhart that sleep up to six. It is not the choice for guests who want a defensive medieval castle, since the building is a 19th-century house designed in a castle-like style rather than a fortified structure. Anyone wanting to be inside the oldest part of the estate should also note that the earlier c.1840 villa fabric survives mainly on the south-east side of the house, behind the more elaborate 1871 remodelling.
