The story
The story of Freswick Castle
Freswick Castle stands above Freswick Bay in Caithness, on the site of a Viking-age settlement at Freswick Links, itself a separate scheduled monument. The present house grew from a tower built in the 16th century by the Sinclair earls of Caithness and the Mowat family of Buchollie, according to the property's own history page.
Historic Environment Scotland lists the building as Category A (LB1799), describing it as a late 17th-century house substantially recast in the late 18th century. Its T-plan tower core survived that remodelling, and the resulting mansion has a symmetrical five-bay north front with harled walls and Orkney stone dressings. Other structures on the estate, including a late 18th-century bridge over the Freswick Burn, carry their own separate listings.
The castle has been a private home for generations and is currently under gradual restoration by its owner. Alongside family use, it has hosted creative residencies and visiting artists over the years, and the whole house is also let out for holidays and weddings.
The sleep
Rooms at Freswick Castle
The castle sleeps 12 guests in six bedrooms and is let as a single exclusive-use property rather than as separate hotel rooms, according to the booking agent Sykes Cottages. Bedrooms include several en suite doubles and a twin room on the upper floors, with seven bathrooms and two further cloakrooms between them.
A minimum stay of three nights applies, and one well-behaved dog is welcome. For weddings, three extra bedrooms in a separate guest cottage can be added to the bridal suite inside the castle, taking overnight capacity higher for the wedding party.
The table
Eating at Freswick Castle
Freswick Castle is self-catering. The kitchen has a double electric oven, ceramic hob, microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher, according to the Sykes Cottages listing, so guests cook for themselves rather than being served meals on site.
For weddings and larger events, the castle does not run its own catering and instead recommends outside caterers such as Mackays Hotel or the Norseman Hotel in Wick, along with North of Scotland Marquees for tents on the grounds.
The grounds
Around Freswick Castle
The castle sits on the shore of Freswick Bay, with a walled garden used for wedding marquees. Its own wedding page lists a Viking Hall for up to 40 guests, a main hall seating 70 for a ceremony or 40 for a banquet, and a garden marquee for up to 150 at a ceremony or 100 or more for a banquet.
The house includes a chapel and function room on its lower-ground floor. Freswick Links, the Viking-age settlement site that gives the castle its name, lies close by and is protected as a separate scheduled monument. Wick is about 12.6 miles (20 km) away, and John o' Groats is a short drive further north.
