The story
The story of Glengarry Castle Hotel
Glengarry Castle Hotel stands by Loch Oich in the Scottish Highlands, between Loch Ness and Loch Lochy. The ruins of the medieval Invergarry Castle, once the seat of the MacDonells of Glengarry, stand within the hotel grounds near the entrance, according to the hotel's own website.
Invergarry Castle was burned in 1654 by troops under General Monck, rebuilt around 1660 to 1665, and then destroyed again after the 1745 Jacobite rising by government forces under the Duke of Cumberland, according to the hotel's own history page.
The current building, originally called Invergarry House, was built between 1866 and 1869 to a design by the Scottish architect David Bryce for Edward Ellice junior. It has canted bay windows and small round towers typical of Bryce's Baronial style. The Ellice family lived there until 1923, after which the house passed through several owners before becoming a hotel.

What we'd flag
What we'd flag
- Pets are not allowed in the Deluxe bedrooms, according to the hotel's own website, which does not state a separate policy for other room categories.
- The historic Invergarry Castle on the grounds is a ruin. Guests sleep in the later Baronial house next to it, not inside the medieval castle itself.
Who it's for
Who Glengarry Castle Hotel suits
Glengarry Castle Hotel suits guests touring the Highlands who want a historic country house base by a loch, with a ruined castle to explore on the grounds. It is less suited to guests who specifically want to sleep inside an intact historic castle, since the medieval Invergarry Castle here is a ruin rather than usable accommodation.
