The story

The story of Inverlochy Castle Hotel

Inverlochy Castle Hotel is a 19th-century castle in the foothills of Ben Nevis, near Fort William, according to the hotel's own website. It was built as a private house rather than a fortification, in a style meant to evoke an older Highland castle.

Queen Victoria stayed at Inverlochy in 1873 while travelling to Balmoral. The hotel quotes her journal from the visit: 'I never saw a lovelier or more romantic spot.' The hotel now uses her stay as part of its own history, alongside the surrounding views of Glen Nevis, Glenfinnan and Glencoe.

This 19th-century building should not be confused with the much older Inverlochy Castle ruin nearby, a separate medieval structure. As a listed building, the hotel has no lift and cannot offer ground-floor bedrooms that are wheelchair accessible in the main castle, according to its own website.

The sleep

Rooms at Inverlochy Castle Hotel

Rooms and suites inside the castle itself are sold as Castle Rooms and Suites, ranging from a small single room called the Ghillie's Closet up to full suites, according to the hotel's website. These rooms look out over Ben Nevis, the loch or the castle gardens.

A second set of rooms, the Walled Garden Rooms, is in a converted historic stable block about a five-minute walk from the castle. This building has five ground-floor rooms, one of them wheelchair accessible, plus junior suites and attic suites.

Guests who want to sleep inside the historic castle building should book a Castle Room or Suite specifically; the Walled Garden Rooms are comfortable but are in a separate, later building.

The table

Eating at Inverlochy Castle Hotel

The hotel's restaurant, Seasgair, is overseen by the two-Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr and offers a single seating each evening, according to the hotel's website. Guests dine on a five-course menu that starts with drinks in the Great Hall.

Seasgair is for hotel guests only, and it is the only dining option after 6.30pm, including room service. The hotel also lists a shared dining option, a lounge and afternoon tea on its website.

The grounds

Around Inverlochy Castle Hotel

The castle stands between Loch Linnhe and Ben Nevis, with its own walled garden, according to the hotel's website. Fort William is about three miles away by road, per the hotel.

Guest activities listed on the hotel's website include fishing, walking, wildlife-watching and golf, along with day trips to Glen Nevis, Glenfinnan and Glencoe.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • Only some rooms are inside the historic castle. If sleeping in the castle itself matters to you, book a Castle Room or Suite rather than a Walled Garden Room.
  • As a listed building, the castle has no lift, so upper-floor castle rooms are not step-free.
  • The main restaurant, Seasgair, is for hotel guests only and offers a single evening sitting, so it is worth booking dinner when you book your room.

Who it's for

Who Inverlochy Castle Hotel suits

This suits couples and guests planning a formal country-house stay or wedding, who want fine dining and Highland scenery within a short drive of Fort William. It also suits guests who want an exclusive-use booking, which the hotel offers.

It does not suit guests who need step-free access to an upper floor, since the listed castle building has no lift, or anyone looking for a working medieval fortress rather than a 19th-century house built in castle style.
