The story

The story of Mingary Castle

Mingary Castle stands on a rocky outcrop above the shore at Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, Highland. Historic Environment Scotland's Category A listing dates its core to the late 13th century, describing an irregular polygonal curtain wall with a wall walk and two corbelled turrets.

The listing records later changes across several centuries, including 16th and 17th-century alterations, an 18th-century three-storey north range, and adaptations for firearms defence as gunpowder changed castle design. Historic Environment Scotland calls it a rare and well-preserved example of a 13th-century west coast castle, noting it withstood sieges during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

By the 21st century the castle had fallen into ruin, with crumbling stonework and floors lost to undergrowth, according to the castle's own website. A restoration project began in 2013 and took about three years, carried out with skilled craftsmen and support connected to Historic Scotland.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • Dinner service runs on fixed evenings, Wednesday to Sunday, rather than every night of the week, according to the castle's own website.
  • This is a small property with only four suites, so book well ahead, particularly given the remote Ardnamurchan location.

Who it's for

Who Mingary Castle suits

Mingary Castle suits guests who want to stay inside a genuine, restored medieval castle in a remote coastal setting, and who are happy with a small number of suites and set dinner sittings.

It is less suited to guests wanting a large hotel with many room choices or late, flexible dining, given its size and the fixed evening service.
