The story
The story of Glengorm Castle
Glengorm Castle stands on the north coast of the Isle of Mull, about 4 miles from Tobermory. Historic Environment Scotland lists it as category B (LB11014), first listed on 20 July 1971, recording a Scots Baronial country house completed in 1860 and designed by the architectural firm Kinnear and Peddie.
The estate's owner, James Forsyth of Quinish, commissioned the castle after the settlement of Sorne was cleared, a history linked to the Highland Clearances. Local legend holds that an elderly woman displaced by the clearance cursed Forsyth never to live in his new castle; he died in a riding accident in 1863 before it was finished.
The property has been a family home for generations. It previously ran as a guest house and wedding venue, and its owners announced the end of a 22-year bed and breakfast business, according to the castle's own site. It now offers self-catering accommodation, a farm shop and a cafe in the former stables.
The sleep
Rooms at Glengorm Castle
Three self-catering apartments are available to book nightly. The Tower apartment, sleeping four, occupies the castle's 1860 tower with access to original features, according to a castle booking partner. The West Wing apartment, sleeping six, is also part of the main castle structure and has a kitchen with an Aga.
The Steadings apartment, sleeping two, is in the former farm stables a short walk from the castle rather than inside the historic building itself, and is described as unsuitable for guests with dogs or young children.
The table
Eating at Glengorm Castle
There is no hotel restaurant. All three apartments are self-catering with fully equipped kitchens, and guests can buy food from the Glengorm coffee shop, which sells produce from the estate's own farm, according to the castle's site.
The grounds
Around Glengorm Castle
The estate covers land on Mull's north coast, with a working farm, a farm shop and walking routes around the coastline, according to the castle's own site. Tobermory is about 4 miles away, reached by road.
