The story
The story of Stonefield Castle Hotel
Stonefield Castle Hotel stands above Loch Fyne, about two miles north of Tarbert in Argyll and Bute. Historic Environment Scotland lists the building as category B (LB18262), recording it as a Scottish Baronial mansion completed in 1837 for John Campbell to a design by the Edinburgh architect William Playfair, replacing an earlier house on the site called Barmore.
Playfair also designed several structures in the grounds, including bridges and a folly, and may have advised on the layout of the gardens, according to Historic Environment Scotland's record. The castle's 60 acres of woodland gardens are separately listed in Scotland's Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes as a nationally important example of a west coast woodland estate.
The house has been used as a hotel since 1950 and, according to the hotel's own site, still retains original wood panelling, ornate ceilings and marble fireplaces from its 19th-century building.
