The story

The story of Sherbrooke Castle Hotel

Sherbrooke Castle Hotel was built in 1896 for John Morrison, described by the hotel as a respected contractor of the period, to a design by the architects Thomson and Sandilands, according to the hotel's own site. It was built as a baronial villa in Pollokshields on Glasgow's south side, with rooms arranged around three sides of a large central hall and staircase, and a high square tower that still stands as a local landmark.

The villa became a hotel shortly before the Second World War. During the war the Royal Navy took over the building and used it as a radar training centre for naval officers, before it returned to hotel use in 1945, according to the hotel's own site. It has operated as a hotel continuously since then and is now marketed as a four-star baronial hotel.

Sherbrooke Castle was built as a late-Victorian private residence in a castle-style design, not as a fortification, which places it as a castle-style mansion on our scale rather than a true castle.
