The story

The story of Glenskirlie Castle Hotel

Glenskirlie Castle stands in Banknock, Stirlingshire, next to the older Glenskirlie House restaurant. It was built between 2005 and 2007, designed by Heinz Voigt of the Voigt Partnership in Arbroath in the style of a 16th-century Scottish castle, complete with a turret, according to a trade profile of the construction project.

The project is described as the first new castle built in Scotland in the 21st century, and cost around 2.5 million pounds, according to the same source. It was built for the Macaloney family, who had already run the neighbouring Glenskirlie House restaurant for 25 years before the castle was added.

The castle contains 15 individually themed bedrooms, several named after rose varieties chosen with input from a rose expert, and includes two 100 square metre suites.

The sleep

Rooms at Glenskirlie Castle Hotel

According to the project profile, the 15 bedrooms are inside the newly built castle itself rather than in the older Glenskirlie House next door. Rooms include four-poster beds, turreted bathrooms with sunken jacuzzi baths and separate dressing rooms.

Guests should confirm current room names and layouts directly with the hotel, since some third-party listings describe the property under both the Glenskirlie House and Glenskirlie Castle names.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • This is a modern castle rather than a historic one. Anyone wanting a building with genuine medieval or early-modern fabric should look elsewhere; the turrets and castellations here date from 2007.

Who it's for

Who Glenskirlie Castle Hotel suits

Glenskirlie Castle suits guests planning a wedding, since it has a dedicated function suite seating up to 120 guests and stained glass windows used as a ceremony backdrop.
