The story

The story of Menstrie Castle Stay

Menstrie Castle stands in the centre of the village of Menstrie, Clackmannanshire, at the foot of the Ochil hills. Historic Environment Scotland describes the surviving building as the main block and west part of the south wing of a U-plan courtyard house dating from the 17th century, built in rubble with an angle turret. The castle is Category A listed, Scotland's highest protection grade for historic buildings, a status it has held since 1960.

The operator's own website links the castle to Sir William Alexander, who was granted the title of Baronet of Nova Scotia by King James I, and names one of its apartments, The Baronet, after this connection. The same source dates the building to around 1560, a century earlier than the period given in the Historic Environment Scotland listing.

The castle fell into disrepair before a restoration campaign in the early 1960s converted it into flats, a project that won a Scottish Civic Trust award in 1962, according to independent local history sources. It continues today as self-catering holiday accommodation.
