The story
The story of Langley Castle
Langley Castle stands near Hexham in Northumberland, close to Hadrian's Wall. Historic England lists it as Grade I (list entry 1154672, first listed on 20 October 1952), recording a medieval tower house built around 1350, thought to have been built for Sir Thomas de Lucy, and later held by the Earl of Northumberland. The listing notes it as a rectangular four-storeyed block with square angle towers projecting from the east and west faces, among the finest tower houses in Northumberland.
The castle was already a roofless ruin by 1541 and remained a largely intact shell for centuries before it was restored around 1900 by the antiquarian Cadwallader Bates. In the 16th century the estate had passed to the Radcliffe family.
The building now operates as a hotel and restaurant set in its own woodland grounds.
The sleep
Rooms at Langley Castle
Nine individually named bedrooms are inside the medieval castle itself, several with four-poster beds, deep-set window seats, exposed stonework and high ceilings, according to the hotel's own site. Some castle rooms also have a sauna, spa bath or fireplace.
Castle View rooms sit on the wider Langley estate, close to the castle, and are the rooms offered for guests travelling with a dog. A separate self-catering villa on the estate offers two bedrooms away from the castle building.
If sleeping inside the historic tower matters to you, book one of the named castle rooms rather than the Castle View accommodation.
The table
Eating at Langley Castle
The hotel runs three dining venues: Josephine Restaurant, described by the hotel as its award-winning main restaurant; the Pavilion, a modern glass-fronted dining room; and the Drawing Room, used for a medieval-style setting and afternoon teas, according to the hotel's own site.
The grounds
Around Langley Castle
Langley Castle sits in its own wooded estate near Hexham and Hadrian's Wall, with the hotel offering daily battlement tours of the castle's medieval and Jacobite history, according to its own information.
A woodland clearing on the estate is used for wedding ceremonies, and the hotel offers several wedding packages for up to 80 guests, according to its site.
What we'd flag
What we'd flag
- Only the nine named castle rooms are inside the medieval tower house; Castle View rooms and the estate villa are separate buildings nearby.
- Dogs are only accepted in Castle View rooms, not in the castle bedrooms themselves, so check availability if you want both a dog and a castle room.
- The hotel hosts weddings regularly, so a quiet stay is more likely outside its scheduled wedding dates.
Who it's for
Who Langley Castle suits
Couples wanting to sleep inside a genuinely medieval tower house, and those interested in the castle's history and battlement tours, are well suited here. Dog owners can also stay, provided they book a Castle View room rather than one in the castle itself.
It suits wedding parties looking for a historic Northumberland venue with woodland grounds. It is less suited to guests who want their dog in a castle bedroom, since pets are restricted to the separate Castle View accommodation.
