The story

The story of Camelot Castle Hotel

Camelot Castle Hotel stands on a clifftop above Tintagel, on the north Cornwall coast. According to the hotel's own history, Victorian entrepreneur Sir Robert Harvey commissioned the building in 1894, and it took five years to complete, opening in 1899. The architect was Silvanus Trevail, known for a series of large Cornish hotels of the period. The building was designed with three towers, named the North, South and East Towers, each with turret windows, giving the hotel its castle-like outline despite being built as a hotel rather than a fortification.

The hotel's own website states that Victorian and Edwardian visitors, including celebrities and dignitaries, stayed here in its early years, and that the building has since been used as a filming location, including for productions such as Knights of the Round Table and Dracula. In 1999 the property was bought by John Mappin, of the Mappin and Webb family, who has run it as a family-owned hotel since, alongside an ongoing restoration programme using original architectural plans found in the hotel's archives.

The sleep

Rooms at Camelot Castle Hotel

Rooms are named after their position in the building: the North, South and East Tower Junior Suites each sleep two people, in spaces of about 21 to 25 square metres, and the hotel's own website highlights turret windows in the South Tower suite. Beyond the towers, Classic rooms come as singles, doubles, twins and family rooms, with sea-view or moor-view options, and there are also self-catering apartments.

Because the whole hotel was built as a single Victorian structure, all of these room types sit within the same building rather than in separate historic and modern wings. Dogs are only allowed in specified Classic rooms and one self-catering apartment, so check which room type you are booking if travelling with a pet.

The table

Eating at Camelot Castle Hotel

Irina's Restaurant and Bar serves food described on the hotel's own website as seasonal, and the Golden Age Bar offers cocktails, wines, spirits and local ales. Explorers Tea Rooms serves afternoon tea, and the hotel also offers pizza. Breakfast can be taken in the Great Hall, where dogs are permitted, and dogs are also allowed in the restaurant during afternoon tea service according to the hotel's own dog policy page.

The grounds

Around Camelot Castle Hotel

The hotel sits on cliffs above Tintagel, on the Atlantic coast of north Cornwall, close to Tintagel Castle, the ruined medieval castle associated with the legend of King Arthur. The clifftop setting and the Arthurian connection are part of why the Victorian builders gave the hotel its name and castle-like towers. The South West Coast Path runs along this stretch of coastline, and Tintagel village is within walking distance.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • Dogs are only allowed in specified Classic rooms and one self-catering apartment, not throughout the hotel, and are limited to one dog per room under 20kg.
  • The hotel is a Victorian building constructed to look like a castle rather than a genuine medieval fortress, despite its name and clifftop setting.

Who it's for

Who Camelot Castle Hotel suits

Camelot Castle Hotel suits visitors who want a clifftop stay close to Tintagel's Arthurian sites and are happy with a Victorian building built in castle style rather than a genuine historic castle. It also suits guests planning a wedding, which the hotel hosts. It is less suited to those who specifically want to sleep inside a medieval castle, since none of the building dates from that period.
