The story
The story of Tregenna Castle Resort
Tregenna Castle was built in 1774 for Samuel Stephens as a private house of about 12 bedrooms, using local granite and topped with four castellated turrets, according to the resort's own history. A glazed skylight bearing the Stephens family coat of arms remains in the building. The house passed to Henry Lewis Stephens in 1834 and stayed in the family until his death in 1867, after which it was sold to the Bolitho family.
The Great Western Railway leased Tregenna in 1878 and bought it outright in 1895, adding function rooms and a restaurant as it turned the house into a hotel for rail travellers, according to the resort's own history. The West Wing was completed in 1932. After the railways were nationalised in 1948 the estate changed hands several times before returning to family ownership in 1992, and the resort hosted the G7 Summit in 2021.
Tregenna Castle is Grade II listed by Historic England, a designation for buildings of special interest rather than the highest tier reserved for the most significant historic structures. It was built as a country house in a castellated style, with no record of it having served a defensive purpose.

Rooms at Tregenna Castle Resort
The resort has 113 hotel rooms and apartments plus 40 cottages and lodges across its 72-acre grounds, according to its own site. Guests can choose rooms in the West Wing of the original castellated building, near the Godrevy View restaurant, or self-catering accommodation set among the resort's subtropical gardens.
Only the rooms in the historic house itself put you inside the 1774 building with its turrets and original details. The cottages and lodges are separate, more modern buildings on the wider estate, so guests who want to sleep in the castle building should ask specifically for a room there when booking.
