The story

The story of Castle Green Hotel in Kendal

Castle Green Hotel takes its name from Kendal Castle, the ruined 13th-century fortress on the opposite side of the River Kent, rather than from any castle building of its own. Historic England records Kendal Castle as a scheduled monument built from around 1184 as a ringwork and developed into a stone castle in the 13th century. Two towers and stretches of curtain wall survive there today, and the site is freely open to the public, managed by South Lakeland District Council.

The hotel itself grew from a Victorian mansion house dating to 1847. That older section now houses four of the hotel's Executive Suites, while the rest of the building is a later, larger hotel extension set in 14 acres of gardens and woodland overlooking the castle ruin and the Lakeland fells.

So despite its name and its castle-facing position, Castle Green Hotel is a 19th-century house turned modern hotel rather than a historic castle building. Guests who want to see the real Kendal Castle can walk to the ruins across the valley, but they will not be sleeping inside them.

The sleep

Rooms at Castle Green Hotel in Kendal

The hotel has 99 bedrooms across several categories: Executive Suites, Herdwick Suites, Junior Suites, Garden View Rooms, King Rooms, Standard Rooms and Interconnecting Rooms. Four Executive Suites sit in the original 1847 section of the building, and two Herdwick Suites have views towards Kendal Castle and the Lakeland fells.

Most of the bedrooms are in the later hotel extension rather than the Victorian mansion, so guests wanting the oldest part of the building should book one of the Executive Suites.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • Only four Executive Suites are in the older, 1847 part of the building. Most rooms are in the modern extension, so ask specifically if a period room matters to you.
  • This is a large hotel rather than a historic castle. Guests hoping to stay inside a real castle should look elsewhere; those wanting a spa and pool base near the Lake District, with castle ruins within walking distance, are well served here.

Who it's for

Who Castle Green Hotel in Kendal suits

Castle Green Hotel suits guests who want a spa, pool and gym within easy reach of the Lake District, and couples planning a wedding, since the hotel offers civil ceremonies and wedding packages. It also suits guests who simply want proximity to the real Kendal Castle ruins for a walk. It does not suit anyone specifically seeking to sleep inside a historic castle building, since the hotel is a 19th-century mansion with modern extensions rather than a fortified structure.
