The story

The story of Augill Castle

Augill Castle stands near Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. Historic England's listing record (grade II, list entry 1144857, listed on 12 September 1957) describes it as a large house in castellated Gothick style, started in 1841 for John Pearson, built of coursed rubble with an embattled parapet and corner turrets across a symmetrical 13-bay front.

The listing notes reused 17th-century panelling in the entrance hall, an ornate fireplace with an embattled mantelpiece, and a traceried stair window said to be modelled on a window at Melrose Abbey. The building later became a private residence and, more recently, a hotel run for around 25 years by its current owners, according to the hotel's own site.
