The story

The story of Muncaster Castle Coachman's Quarters

Muncaster Castle stands above the River Esk near Ravenglass in Cumbria and is Grade I listed by Historic England. Its oldest fabric is a 14th-century pele tower in the south-west corner, a type of border watch-tower built to warn of raids. The house was enlarged around 1780 for the 2nd Lord Muncaster and then substantially remodelled between 1862 and 1866 by the architect Anthony Salvin for the 4th Lord Muncaster.

The Coachman's Quarters occupy the estate's former stable yard buildings, separate from the castle itself. They have been converted into self-catering accommodation with a shared kitchen, dining room and lounge, according to the estate's own site. Guests here are staying on the wider Muncaster estate rather than inside the listed castle building.

The sleep

Rooms at Muncaster Castle Coachman's Quarters

The Coachman's Quarters have nine en suite bedrooms in a mix of doubles, twins and family rooms, sleeping between one and four people each, plus a six-bed bunk room with its own bathroom across the hall, according to the estate's own site. Rooms have flat-screen televisions, tea and coffee facilities, and free toiletries. Guests share a fully equipped kitchen with a cooker, dishwasher and fridge freezer, and can arrange a grab-and-go breakfast bag at check-in.

Because the building is a former stable block rather than part of the castle, anyone wanting to sleep inside the historic house itself would need to look at other accommodation on the estate or elsewhere nearby.

Around Muncaster Castle Coachman's Quarters
