The story

The story of Killeavy Castle Estate

The castle at the centre of Killeavy Castle Estate was built as a family home in the mid-19th century and is a Grade A listed building, according to the estate's own website. Architectural sources describe alterations in 1836 by architect George Papworth, who added four towers and Tudor-style windows in a style deliberately close to nearby Gosford Castle in Markethill.

The estate's own website names the castle's easterly turret suite the Foxall Suite, matching the Foxall family associated with the house's early history. The Bell family later owned the estate for more than a century. It underwent extensive renovation before reopening to the public as a hotel and wedding venue in 2019.

The sleep

Rooms at Killeavy Castle Estate

The castle itself has just four guestrooms, all on the upper floor, according to the estate's own accommodation page: individually styled rooms with four-poster king beds, apart from a premier suite, and ground-floor reception rooms including a Drawing Room and Circular Library. These castle rooms are only available when the whole castle is rented as an exclusive-use property, not booked individually.

Most guests instead stay in the estate's separate 45-room hotel, described on its own website as a contemporary building with 10 Deluxe, 8 Walled Garden, 26 Superior rooms and one Kennedy Family room, set in 365 acres of farm and woodland. A servants' tunnel and woodland path connect the historic castle to the hotel, restaurant, bistro and spa.

The table

Eating at Killeavy Castle Estate

The estate's own site describes a restaurant offering 'farm to fork' dining, alongside the Calliagh Berra Bistro and Bar for gastropub-style food, an afternoon tea service and a Sunday roast.

The grounds

Around Killeavy Castle Estate

The estate covers 365 acres of mixed farm and woodland near Meigh, County Armagh, at the foot of Slieve Gullion, about 10 minutes by road from Newry, according to the estate's own website. Grounds include a heritage Walled Garden and a spa.

What we'd flag

What we'd flag

  • The castle's four bedrooms cannot be booked on their own. They come only as part of an exclusive-use rental of the whole castle, so most hotel guests stay in the separate modern hotel building rather than the historic house.
  • Only guide dogs are allowed in the main hotel. Guests wanting to bring a pet dog should book one of the estate's four self-catering residences instead.

Who it's for

Who Killeavy Castle Estate suits

The estate suits groups and wedding parties who want exclusive use of a Grade A listed castellated house, and couples or families who want a country hotel stay with spa and dining on a historic estate. It is less suited to anyone hoping to book an individual room inside the historic castle itself, since those four rooms are only let as a single exclusive-use booking.
