The story

The story of Midford Castle Sport and Wellness Resort

Midford Castle stands above the Midford Valley near Bath. It was built in 1775 to a design by architect John Carter for Henry Disney Roebuck, in a Gothic style with three semi-circular towers joined together. Historic England lists the castle as Grade I, list entry 1277079, and separately lists Grade II and Grade II star structures in its grounds.

Ownership passed to a branch of the Conolly family of County Kildare from 1810 until 1901, and later to Michael Fenwick Briggs and the writer Isabel Colegate from 1961. Actor Nicolas Cage bought the castle in July 2007 for 5 million pounds, and Scott Adams, founder of the sports nutrition brand Nutrisport, became the owner in 2009.

The Adams family has restored the castle and its outbuildings, and Midford Castle is now run as a sport and wellness estate. The main castle building and its grounds are reserved for guests booking a stay rather than open to the general public.

The sleep

Rooms at Midford Castle Sport and Wellness Resort

Guests do not book conventional hotel rooms at Midford Castle. Instead, the estate offers separate self-catering holiday lets across the grounds. The Vaults sit on the castle's own ground floor and sleep up to 16 or 18 guests depending on configuration, with a king bed, eight single beds, and several sofa beds and couches across two kitchens.

The Chapel, a former castle chapel, sleeps eight guests in three super king bedrooms, and the Stables, a former stable block, sleeps four guests across two super king bedrooms. If sleeping inside the historic castle itself matters to you, the Vaults are the only option confirmed to be within the main building.

The table

Midford Castle does not publish restaurant or dining information on its general website, and each self-catering property has its own kitchen instead. Guests cooking for themselves should check individual listing pages for kitchen equipment, since it varies between properties, such as the Vaults, which has two kitchens, and the Stables, which has one.

Who it's for

Who Midford Castle Sport and Wellness Resort suits

Midford Castle suits groups and families wanting a self-catering stay with a private hot tub, rather than a staffed hotel with a restaurant. It suits guests who specifically want to sleep inside the historic 1775 building, provided they book the Vaults rather than one of the other lets. It suits fewer guests looking for daily housekeeping or a dining service, since the estate operates as self-catering accommodation.
