The story
The story of YHA St Briavels Castle
St Briavels Castle was built in the early 12th century as a royal castle on the frontier with Wales, according to English Heritage, and served as the administrative and judicial centre of the Forest of Dean, a royal hunting ground.
Edward I added a twin-towered gatehouse to the castle in 1292, English Heritage says. Under his reign the castle also housed a crossbow bolt factory, using iron from the Forest of Dean to supply his campaigns against Wales and Scotland. After Wales was conquered, the gatehouse was later converted into a debtor's prison.
The castle is now run as a youth hostel by the Youth Hostel Association (YHA), according to English Heritage. The moat and exterior grounds are open to visitors during daylight hours, while access to the interior requires advance permission from YHA staff.
