The story

The story of Thornbury Castle

Thornbury Castle stands in Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, about 20 minutes from Bristol. Historic England lists the inner court at Grade I, recording construction from around 1511 for Edward, 3rd Duke of Buckingham.

The duke never finished his project. He was executed for treason in 1521, and Historic England's listing describes the castle as a monument to his unrealised ambition, with work halted mid-build.

The surviving inner court includes a gatehouse and west, south and north ranges built of Cotswold stone, with large polygonal outer towers and intermediate turrets. Historic England notes compass windows on the south front and original 16th-century stone fireplaces and chimney stacks among its listed features.

The building was restored in the 19th century by the architect Anthony Salvin, and a further addition was made in 1997 by Niall Phillips Architects, according to the Historic England list entry. It now operates as a hotel and restaurant.

The sleep

Rooms at Thornbury Castle

The hotel has 27 rooms and suites, according to Relais & Chateaux, ranging from Deluxe rooms to suites named after Tudor historical figures.

Three named suites sit in the main tower, reached by a spiral staircase: the Jane Seymour Suite, the Henry VIII Suite and the Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite. The hotel's own website describes the Henry VIII Suite as the room where Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed in 1535, and the Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite as sitting 77 steps up the tower with a four-poster bed.

A separate Henry VII Suite is described on the hotel site as a family suite with its own lounge area. If sleeping in the original tower matters to you, ask for one of the three named tower suites when you book.

The table

Eating at Thornbury Castle

The hotel restaurant holds 3 AA Rosettes, according to the hotel's own website, and serves British-inspired cooking across dining rooms inside the castle.

Relais & Chateaux describes the kitchen, under chef David Williams, as using vegetables from the castle's own gardens alongside produce from local farmers, with vegetarian options available.

The grounds

Around Thornbury Castle

The castle sits in grounds of about 15 acres, according to Relais & Chateaux, including walled and enclosed gardens overlooked by the tower rooms.

The hotel's own site lists axe-throwing and birds of prey displays among the activities on offer in the grounds, alongside a Tudor-style garden setting.

Who it's for

Who Thornbury Castle suits

The castle suits couples wanting a genuine Tudor building for an anniversary or wedding, since Historic England's Grade I listing confirms the fabric dates from the early 16th century rather than a later castle-style copy.

It also suits guests planning a wedding or exclusive event, given the hotel's own description of hosting private hire and meeting space for up to 120 people. It is less suited to families wanting a large choice of connecting or budget rooms, since the named historic suites are limited in number and the tower rooms involve a spiral staircase with no lift.
